School Readiness, the Playful Way

Play Scouts is an early learning program for PreK-age children that builds school readiness skills through exploration, curiousity, and most importantly, play!
Little learners will grow social skills and friendships, explore new experiences, and develop a strong academic foundation before kindergarten. The group uses a framework that’s standard-aligned with Minnesota’s early childhood learning goals (ECIPS), and offers daily opportunities for child-led engagement and academic growth that feels
like just plain fun.
Play Scouts is not childcare or daycare, but instead works more like a “class” to build school readiness skills for kids ages 3, 4, and 5. Currently in the 2025-2026 school year, classes are held from 9am to 2:30pm on Mondays through Thursdays. The enrollment size remains small to ensure an individualized academic and social experience for children of all abilities.

The group meets in the classroom space and explores outdoors at my home, the Forty Acre Wood, in Two Harbors. It’s the perfect venue for hands-on learning, which often happens outside and can definitely get messy. There are indoor and outdoor spaces set up for sensory play, experiments, and whole group activities. Guided play stations give children agency in their learning and create an atmosphere of empowerment.

Each week, our lessons dive into a specific theme and our activities are based in 4 core learning areas: literacy + language, math, social-emotional development, and STEAM (with an emphasis on environmental learning). Adults will receive weekly outlines of our activity plans, the academic goals they support, and extension ideas so you and your child can keep the learning fun going at home.
